3-dimensional Sun Protection
When exposed to the sun, suitable sunscreen products should be used to support the skin’s own protection mechanisms. Important ingredients of a sunscreen product are the filter substances that act as a shield between the sun and the skin.
A distinction is made between physical and chemical sunscreens.
Physical sunscreens are inorganic substances that reflect or scatter UV radiation reaching their surface but do not allow it to penetrate the skin. Normally they are mineral pigments such as titanium dioxide. An important development have been micronized pigments with a particle size between 10 and 50 nm. When used in a suitable base (cream, lotion), physical sunscreens are not a cosmetic problem.
Chemical sunscreens are organic aromatic compounds that can absorb UV radiation. A distinction is made between UVB, UVA and broadband filters depending on the wavelength range absorbed. The absorbed energy is released again as thermal radiation.

- The effective UVA/UVB protection is based on a combination of anorganic filters (micropigments) and organic filters with TINOSORB®S (patented), that meets the latest scientific level and exceeds the demands of EU recommendation. TINOSORB®S has not only a broad absorption spectrum but also an excellent absorption capacity: TINOSORB®S absorbs three times more UVA radiation than other broadband filters.
- On top Eucerin® Sun Protection contains the biological protection factor Licochalcone A which was discovered as a highly potent agent in reducing oxidative stress. Licochalcone A is a natural ingredient from roots of Glycyrrhiza inflata. This plant uses the anti-oxidative efficacy of Licochalcone A to protect its cells against intensive UV radiation. In a sunscreen Licochalcone A penetrates into the viable epidermis where it becomes active and is proven to protect skin’s cells against free radical formation by UV radiation.
