Feet Have Special Needs

Our feet are the “ultimate hard workers”. Over the course of our life they carry us a distance of about 100,000 km. With every step we take they bear three times our body weight. Although we put a huge burden on our feet, we give them much too little loving care.
Only a complex interplay of 26 bones (one-quarter of the bones in the human body are foot bones), 107 tendons and 19 muscles enables humans to walk upright.
The skin on the sole of the feet with approx. 370 sweat glands per square centimetre shows the highest density of sweat glands of the whole human body.

Many people are regularly plagued by swollen and painful feet with pressure points, calluses and corns as well as by tired and heavy legs. Sometimes our feet even develop deformities. The number of harmful influences on our feet is increasing continuously. Stylish shoes are the reason why women are 20 times more likely than men to have foot damage.
These problems have many causes: long periods of standing or walking, uncomfortable shoes (too tight, too elevated heels, unevenly worn away heels, etc.), being overweight, vein diseases (e.g. varicose veins) or circulation problems (e.g. in diabetes).

Corns and calluses

Seventy percent of all foot problems, including development of corns and calluses on sites subjected to excessive pressure, are caused by improper shoes. Corns are conical thickenings of the horny skin layer that grow inward. The pressure they exert on underlying bones often makes them very painful. They occur mainly on the toes or over the toe joints, especially at points where shoes exert pressure. Frequently, diabetics and patients with circulation problems are affected. Pressure-reducing rings, a softening cream and avoidance of tight shoes are helpful in reducing corns and calluses. It is especially important for diabetics to permanently check their feet and the soles of the feet, to treat their feet properly and to give them continuous care also as prophylactic protection against skin damage.
